WHITEDALE FARM
With support from BCM, we obtained planning permission in 2022 for the conversion of a contemporary agricultural building into a four-bedroom dwelling within the South Downs National Park, under Paragraph 49 policy. The design carefully considered orientation and solar gain, setting the principal elevation back beneath the existing roof overhang to mitigate overheating along the southern façade. The roof cladding extends down two elevations to create a unified architectural form, while timber cladding on the remaining elevations introduces warmth and texture. A single-storey element helps to balance the overall massing of the building and provides a terrace to the master bedroom above. The project was completed on site in autumn 2023.

Design Intent
The dwelling was designed to achieve a high level of environmental performance, incorporating ground-mounted photovoltaic panels and an air source heat pump.
As a result, the building demonstrates a net negative carbon impact of –1.7 tonnes of CO₂ per year (compared with an average household emission of 6 tonnes) and achieves an Energy Performance Rating of ‘A’.
