WEST BARNS

Planning permission was granted in 2018 for the conversion of a residential outbuilding into a home office, along with works to a Grade II listed barn to create ancillary accommodation for the main house, all within the South Downs National Park.

The existing cart shed comprised a four-bay open structure with part brick-and-flint and blockwork construction, open on one side and previously used for log storage. The Grade II listed barn had been used for storage and was deteriorating. The project involved the sensitive repair and conversion of both structures and was completed on site in 2022.

Design Intent

The clients were committed to ensuring the buildings were repaired and converted with sensitivity so that their historic character would be preserved. The listed barn, in particular, underwent careful restoration, allowing many of its original features to remain visible within the space.

The landscape setting for both buildings was carefully considered, with a thoughtfully designed layout introduced, including the addition of a heritage greenhouse within the walled garden.
